Is Quartz Magnetic?  (Answered)

Quartz is diamagnetic, it is weakly attracted towards the magnetic field.

The relationship between quartz and magnetism depends upon the properties that we are going to discuss in this article.

Is Quartz Magnetic?  (Explained)

Quartz Facts

Quartz is the second most copious mineral present in the earth’s crust.

It’s composed of oxygen and silica having the chemical formula SiO₂, and sometimes minor impurities such as lithium, sodium, potassium, and titanium are present too.

There are two forms of Quartz; alpha quartz, and beta quartz.

Alpha quartz is constant up to 573◦C, having trigonal structure, while Beta alpha is constant above 573◦C, having hexagonal structure.

The alteration between these two forms is due to the small movements of the atoms present inside the mineral.

Quartz in its original form is rock or in sand form.

Magnetism

What are magnets and what is magnetism?

When the positive and negative charges present inside an element move, they exert a force known as Magnetism.

And the substance from which this force is exerted is called Magnets.

The magnets have two poles, north and south, and they operate in a way that opposite poles attract and similar poles repel.

The portion to which the magnets are attracted is called the magnetic field.

Earth itself is a huge magnet having its magnetic field deep down in its core.

Magnetism of the Earth is important for sustaining its life.

There are two types of magnets.

Diamagnets and Paramagnets.

Diamagnets are those who are attracted towards the external magnetic field, while paramagnets are not attracted or weakly attracted towards the external magnetic field.

The magnetic nature of a substance is based upon its electronic configuration.

If a substance has unpaired electrons, then it’s paramagnetic and otherwise diamagnetic.

Magnetism of Quartz

Quartz is diamagnetic. Principally, magnets affect ferrous metals, such as iron, steel, and titanium.

A substance having any of these elements is magnetic.

Now, looking at the chemical formula of Quartz, which is SiO₂, showing that it contains silicon and oxygen, so none of these elements is a ferrous metal, so that explains why quartz is diamagnetic.

In conclusion, Quartz is not strongly affected by the magnetic field and it is a diamagnetic mineral.

We learned everything that lies between quartz and magnetism, hoping it was useful for all of us.
